Some comments of colleague musicians when Wolter won
the VPRO Boy Edgar price:
Michael Moore: "Wolter is a very fluid
improvisor with a huge vocabulary. He is also a master of interpretation.
Many people have ideas and write them down. Sometimes only Wolter
can make them sound musical. Last but not least, he has a great
sound."
Gerry Hamingway: "Ï have the good fortune of working
with what I feel are some of the most gifted trombone players of
our time, the ones who have repositioned the boundaries of a very
unforgiving instrument. There are three among these who stand out
and with whom I have had the good fortune to have spent many years
of music making with: Ray Anderson, George Lewis and Wolter Wierbos.
Wolter, who we honor tonight, has developed a profound relationship
to music's purest essence: sound.
